Fertilizing
Fertilizers can keep your landscape looking green and healthy, but when used incorrectly they can damage your plants. Choose fertilizer formulated for your soil, environment, and season. Be sure to follow instructions!
Use Teflon Tape
When installing threaded PVC pipe fittings use 2 to 3 wraps of teflon tape. This will allow fittings to seal correctly by simply hand tightening them.
Water In The Morning
Set your sprinklers to water between 5:00 am and 10:00 am when water pressure is at it's best and the temperature is cool. Daytime watering is less efficient because of wind and evaporation.
Design With Head-to-Head Coverage
Wonder why many lawns have dry spots? In many cases it is because they didn't design with head-to-head sprinkler coverage. Head-to-head coverage means that sprinklers spray to the body of each other, not just to the spray of the other. Twice the coverage, twice the effectiveness.

Use Larger Valve Boxes
When installing your valves, use an oversized valve box to ensure you have plenty of space to work in when making repairs in the future. You may even want to leave room for more valves in case you decide to add to your sprinkler system later.
Easy Access To Your Controller
Make sure you install your sprinkler controller in a convenient place. Accessibility and good lighting will simplify programming and testing your sprinkler system.
Purchase Extra Wire
When purchasing and cutting your wire, make sure you have more wire than you think you need. Extra wire can be used up quickly by obstacles between your sprinkler controllerand the valves. Splicing wire to extend the length isn't easy or cheap. Also, leave extra wire at the controller just in case you need to move it later.
Put Gravel In Valve Boxes
When installing your valve boxes fill the bottom with pete gravel (don't bury the valves). This will help keep it neat and provides adequate drainage.
Head To Head Coverage
For an efficient sprinkler system make sure the sprinkler heads are spraying to each others bodies. It is not enough for their streams to simply reach each other. Head to Head coverage creates better uniformity and prevents over watering the "dry spots."

Wet Around The Sprinkler?
If water is constantly leaking out of your sprinkler then it most likely is the valve. The Valve? Really? Yes. Most people assume it is the sprinkler that has the problem but remember it is the valve that stops the flow of the water. The other common issue is that the left over water in the pipes is draining out of the lowest sprinkler on the zone, called Low Head Drainage.
Large Water Droplets
When watering in areas with slopes or windy conditions, use a sprinkler that produces large water droplets. This prevents the water from being blown away and reduces wasteful run-off.
Clay Soil and Spray Heads
When using spray heads on clay soil you may need to run your zones twice for a shorter period of time. This will prevent run-off and gives the water time to seep deeper into the ground.
