Why does more than one valve open at a time

There are four situations that will cause multiple valves to be open at a time.

1. Multiple valves connected on one zone of the controller.  Most commercial grade controllers can handle 2-3 valves connected to the same zone.  As long as there is enough water to handle them then it is ok to leave it this way.  It may have been connected this way when adding another valve to the system but not having enough wires run to the valve box.  It may also have been a temporary relief for too much water presure (this is not recommended to do. You should always use a pressure reducer).

2. Multiple valves are connected to same wires in the valve box.  There are two wires needed to connect to each valve.  One is a common that is shared by all the valves in the valve box.  The second is a distinct wire that determines which zone the valve is assigned to.  Notes from #1 apply to this as well.

3. A valve is connected to the master valveThe master valve is a valve that turns the water on to the whole system.  It stays on the entire time the system runs and shuts off after the last zone has run.  It should only be used in situations where it is actually needed.  Due to the complexity of many master valve setups we recommend you contact a professional in your area before taking a valve off of or adding a valve to a master valve setup.

4. A valve is stuck open.  A valve will remain open if the diaphragm has been damaged or debris is stuck within it.  Depending on the cause, the whole zone may turn on or water will leak out of some of the heads.  Please review the many articles that contain the causes and fixes for this issue.
