Water Leaking From Sprinkler Head After System Is Turned Off
Problem:
After the sprinkler system turns off you notice that there is water leaking out around one of the sprinkler heads.
Cause:
1. "Low Head Drainage": After the sprinkler system shuts off, there is still water left in the pipes. Gravity pulls the water to the lowest sprinkler head on the system and the water drains out of it.
2. Faulty Sprinkler Valve: A damaged or dirty sprinkler valve is not closing completely.
Solution:
1. (Low Head Drainage): Install a check valve on the sprinkler. Check valves prevent water from flowing through the sprinkler once the valve has been turned off. If you install a check valve then you will have to blow out your system when winterizing it.
2. (Faulty Sprinkler Valve): Take the valve apart and rinse off the components to remove any dirt or debris.
Rinse off the diaphragm and quickly flush system before putting parts back together. This will clean out debris that may have fallen into valve or pipe.
Take off the solenoid. CAREFUL: PLUNGER AND SPRING MAY NOT BE ATTACHED TO THE SOLENOID AND WILL EASILY GET LOST. Rinse parts. Quickly flush system and then put parts back together.
Check the valve parts and replace any that are broken or torn (such as the diaphragm).
